An unknown person or group writing under the name Satoshi Nakamoto published the Bitcoin whitepaper in 2008 and launched the open-source software in 2009. Blockchain Blockchain is the term given to the underlying technology powering cryptocurrencies and other digital assets using a distributed, decentralized ledger. This ledger, or database, is often publicly searchable and supported by a network of computers utilizing cryptographically secure systems to validate and record every transaction that occurs. DeFi DeFi (an abbreviation of "decentralized finance") most often refers to the practice of trading cryptocurrencies and tokens directly with other individuals or entities using tools provided by decentralized exchanges.
